BNIB vs Pre-Owned vs Vintage: What Do Watch Conditions Really Mean?

Condition is the single biggest factor in watch pricing after the reference number. But the terms aren't standardized — "excellent" to one dealer is "good" to another. Here's what each condition really means and how it affects value.

Condition Tiers

BNIB (Brand New In Box)

Price impact: Maximum value (100%)

The watch has never been worn. Stickers may or may not still be on (stickers don't define BNIB — the watch's condition does). Complete set: box, papers, warranty card, all links, hang tag, and accessories. Warranty card typically dated within the last 12-18 months.

Like New / Unworn

Price impact: 95-100% of BNIB

The watch may have been tried on or briefly worn but shows zero visible wear. Functionally identical to BNIB but the warranty card might be older. Complete set.

Mint / Excellent

Price impact: 85-95% of BNIB

Light hairline scratches on the clasp or bracelet from normal wear. Crystal is perfect. Bezel is perfect. The watch looks great but has been worn. Complete set.

Very Good

Price impact: 75-85% of BNIB

Visible scratches on the case, bracelet, and possibly light marks on the bezel. Nothing deep — all cosmetic. All functions work perfectly. May or may not be complete set.

Good / Fair

Price impact: 60-75% of BNIB

Obvious wear. May have been polished (which removes material from the case, reducing value). Might be missing box, papers, or links. Still fully functional.

Vintage

Price impact: Varies wildly

Generally refers to watches 25+ years old. Vintage pricing follows completely different rules — patina, tropical dials, and "honest wear" can actually increase value. This is a specialist market.

What Matters Most

  1. Crystal condition — a scratched sapphire crystal is an expensive fix
  2. Case sharpness — unpolished cases with original finishing are worth more
  3. Completeness — box + papers add 10-20% vs watch-only
  4. Movement service — recently serviced by Rolex (RSC) is ideal
  5. Card date — newer cards = higher value for modern references

At Open Wrist, we grade every watch honestly and document condition with detailed photography. Every purchase is backed by a blockchain Certificate of Authenticity that permanently records condition at time of sale.
